    NEW YORK (Reuters) - Highlights of the first day at the U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows on Monday (times GMT):

    0411 SABALENKA STORMS PAST HON

    Former finalist Aryna Sabalenka overpowered Australian qualifier Priscilla Hon 6-3 6-3. The Belarusian second seed will face Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti in the second round.

    0357 DJOKOVIC CRUISES INTO SECOND ROUND

    Defending champion Novak Djokovic eased past Moldovan Radu Albot 6-2 6-2 6-4 to reach the second round.

    0230 TIAFOE OVERCOMES KOVACEVIC

    Former semi-finalist Frances Tiafoe defeated fellow American Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4 6-3 4-6 7-5 on Louis Armstrong stadium to set up a second-round match against Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko.

    0124 BUREL UPSETS STEPHENS

    France's Clara Burel recovered from a first-set bagel to knock out former champion Sloane Stephens 0-6 7-5 7-5 and set up a second-round match against Victoria Azarenka.

    0109 AZARENKA FIGHTS BACK

    Two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka of Belarus fought back to beat Yulia Starodubtseva 3-6 6-1 6-1. There was no handshake at the net between 20th seed Azarenka and her Ukrainian opponent.

    Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova made a good start to her campaign by beating Spanish qualifier Marina Bassols Ribera 7-6(3) 6-2 in the first round.

    2333 NAKASHIMA SHOCKS RUNE IN STRAIGHT SETS

    American Brandon Nakashima claimed a stunning 6-2 6-1 6-4 win over Dane 15th seed Holger Rune to reach the second round.

    2240 MONFILS TRIUMPHS, SCHWARTZMAN BIDS FAREWELL

    Frenchman Gael Monfils rallied from a set down to reach the second round with a 6-7(2) 6-2 6-2 6-1 win over former quarter-finalist Argentina's Diego Schwartzman, who played his final match at the U.S. Open.

    2212 MUSETTI OVERCOMES OPELKA

    Italian 18th seed Lorenzo Musetti took almost three hours to earn a 7-6(3) 1-6 6-1 7-5 win over American Reilly Opelka.

    2209 DIMITROV DOWNS JACQUET

    Ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria eased into the second round with a 6-3 6-4 6-2 win over French qualifier Kyrian Jacquet.

    2108 FORMER FINALIST KEYS ADVANCES

    American 14th seed Madison Keys, who reached the final in 2017, defeated Czech Katerina Siniakova 6-4 6-1 to reach the second round.

    Keys will now play American-born Australian Maya Joint, after the 18-year-old qualifier beat German Laura Siegemund 6-4 7-5 in her Grand Slam singles debut.

    2008 RUBLEV INTO NEXT ROUND

    Russian sixth seed Andrey Rublev overcame Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-3 7-6(3) 7-5 to reach the second round.

    1944 FRITZ THROUGH TO FACE BERRETTINI

    American 12th seed Taylor Fritz enjoyed a 7-5 6-1 6-2 first round win over Argentina's Camilo Ugo Carabelli.

    Fritz will play Matteo Berrettini in the second round after the Italian beat Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-6(2) 6-2 6-3.

    1940 DEFENDING CHAMPION GAUFF STROLLS INTO SECOND ROUND

    American third seed and last year's winner Coco Gauff made light work of her first-round match to win 6-2 6-0 against France's Varvara Gracheva.

    Gauff takes on Tatjana Maria next after the German overcame Solana Sierra of Argentina 6-2 6-3 to reach the second round.

    1902 RUUD REACHES SECOND ROUND

    Norwegian eighth seed Casper Ruud, finalist in 2022, beat China's Bu Yunchaokete 7-6(2) 6-2 6-2 to advance to the second round.

    1806 ZVEREV WINS ALL-GERMAN CLASH

    German fourth seed Alexander Zverev beat compatriot and lucky loser Maximilian Marterer 6-2 6-7(5) 6-3 6-2 to reach the second round.

    1804 SHELTON BEATS FORMER CHAMPION THIEM

    American 13th seed Ben Shelton, semi-finalist last year, had a comfortable 6-4 6-2 6-2 win over Austrian wildcard and former champion Dominic Thiem to reach the second round.

    Thiem, who won the 2020 U.S. Open, is retiring at the end of this season.

    1730 QINWEN COMEBACK SEES OFF ANISIMOVA

    China's Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, the seventh seed, came from a set down to beat American wildcard Amanda Anisimova 4-6 6-4 6-2 at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.

    1729 SVITOLINA SURVIVES CARLE SCARE

    Ukraine 27th seed Elina Svitolina, a semi-finalist in 2019, advanced to the second round with a 3-6 6-3 6-4 win over Maria Lourdes Carle of Argentina.

    1728 HUMBERT EASES PAST MONTEIRO

    French 17th seed Ugo Humbert moved into the second round after a 6-3 6-4 6-4 win over Brazilian Thiago Monteiro.

    1625 KASATKINA INTO SECOND ROUND

    Russian 12th seed Daria Kasatkina eased into the second round with a 6-2 6-4 win over Romania's Jaqueline Cristian.

    1550 SAKKARI RETIRES AGAINST WANG

    Greek ninth seed Maria Sakkari retired due to injury after losing the first set 6-2 to China's Yafan Wang in their first-round match.

    Wang broke serve in the opening game and raced into a 5-1 lead. Sakkari needed a medical timeout to treat her shoulder and was unable to continue.

    1500 PLAY UNDER WAY

    Play began under partly cloudy skies in New York, with the temperature hovering around 26 degrees Celsius (78 degrees Fahrenheit).
