    NEW YORK (Reuters) - Highlights of the second day of the U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday (times GMT):

    0541 PAUL THROUGH TO SECOND ROUND

    Wimbledon quarter-finalist Tommy Paul beat Italy's Lorenzo Sonego 6-4 6-2 5-7 6-2 in the first round. The 14th seed will next face Australia's Max Purcell.

    0405 ROGERS RETIRES AFTER PEGULA LOSS

    Former French and U.S. Open quarter-finalist Shelby Rogers called time on her playing career following a first-round loss to Jessica Pegula.

    "I expected to feel a lot of emotions. The main one is just gratitude," the 31-year-old said. "Gratitude for all the amazing moments and some tough ones on this court too. But really special that I am able to play here one more time."

    0352 PEGULA ROUTS ROGERS

    Sixth seed Jessica Pegula beat fellow American Shelby Rogers 6-4 6-3 to set up match against a another compatriot in Sofia Kenin, who defeated Emma Raducanu.

    0218 PAOLINI PROGRESSES TO SECOND ROUND

    French Open and Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini overcame a first-set stumble to beat former U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu 6-7(5) 6-2 6-4. Paolini will play former finalist Karolina Pliskova in the second round.

    0207 ALCARAZ BEATS LI TU

    French Open and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz beat Australian qualifier Li Tu 6-2 4-6 6-3 6-1 to progress to the second round, where he will face Botic van De Zandschulp.

    Brazilian 22nd seed Beatriz Haddad Maia recovered from a first-set wobble to beat Armenian Elina Avanesyan 4-6 6-0 6-2.

    Russian 16th seed Liudmila Samsonova saw off China's Qiang Wang 6-2 7-5, while men's 16th seed American Sebastian Korda defeated Corentin Moutet of France 7-6(3) 6-1 6-0.

    Australian 10th seed Alex De Minaur showed he is fully recovered from the hip injury that forced him to withdraw from the Paris Olympics last month by beating American Marcos Giron 6-3 6-4 5-7 6-4.

    2240 EVANS SURVIVES TO BEAT KHACHANOV

    Britain's Dan Evans came through a marathon contest lasting five hours and 35 minutes, the longest ever match of the tournament in the professional era, to beat 23rd seed Karen Khachanov 6-7(6) 7-6(2) 7-6(4) 4-6 6-4.

    2212 MEDVEDEV AND FILS MOVE ON

    Russian fifth seed and former U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev overcame a second-set wobble to beat unseeded Serbian Dusan Lajovic 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-1. Frenchman Arthur Fils beat American Learner Tien 6-4 3-6 6-1 6-2.

    2059 SINNER FIGHTS BACK

    World number one Italian Jannik Sinner fought back from a set down to beat American Mackenzie McDonald 2-6 6-2 6-1 6-2.

    The Australian Open champion continues his quest for a second Grand Slam title after coming under intense scrutiny for escaping a doping ban despite failing two drug tests in March.

    Former Wimbledon champion and fourth seed Elena Rybakina eased past Australian Destanee Aiava 6-1 7-6(1).

    Russian Mirra Andreeva beat Colombian Camila Osorio 6-2 7-6(4).

    1917 OSAKA OUTCLASSES OSTAPENKO

    Former world number one and twice U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka beat 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-3 6-2 to reach the second round.

    1906 KOKKINAKIS UPSETS TSITSIPAS

    Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis sealed a hard-fought 7-6(5) 4-6 6-3 7-5 win over 11th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece.

    1850 WOZNIACKI MARCHES ON

    Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki outclassed Japan's Nao Hibino 6-0 6-1.

    1842 DRAPER CRUISES INTO SECOND ROUND

    Jack Draper reached the second round after his Chinese opponent Zhang Zhizhen retired with a left leg injury in the third set with the Briton leading 6-3 6-0 4-0.

    1808 SWIATEK ADVANCES

    Polish top seed Iga Swiatek knocked out unseeded Kamilla Rakhimova of Russia with a 6-4 7-6(6) victory. The world number one will face Japanese Ena Shibahara in the second round.

    1750 DOLEHIDE STUNS COLLINS

    Caroline Dolehide recovered from losing the first set to knock out fellow American and 11th seed Danielle Collins 1-6 7-5 6-4 and set up a second-round match against Italian Sara Errani.

    1738 BOULTER MOVES PAST SASNOVICH

    British number one Katie Boulter came from a set down to defeat Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich 5-7 6-2 6-1.

    1710 MENSIK STUNS AUGER ALIASSIME

    Czech 18-year-old Jakub Mensik knocked out Felix Auger Aliassime, beating the Canadian 19th seed 6-2 6-4 6-2 to advance to the second round.
