French Open and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz was stunned 6-1 7-5 6-4 in the second round by unseeded Botic van de Zandschulp, the Spaniard suffering his earliest Grand Slam exit since 2021.
Dutchman Van de Zandschulp will face Britain's Jack Draper next.
0327 WOZNIACKI BEATS ZARAZUA
Former Australian Open winner Caroline Wozniacki beat Mexico's Renata Zarazua 6-3 6-3 in the second round. The Danish two-time U.S. Open finalist will face Frenchwoman Jessika Ponchet in the third round.
0115 MEDVEDEV BREEZES PAST MAROZSAN
Former champion Daniil Medvedev, the fifth seed, beat Hungary's Fabian Marozsan 6-3 6-2 7-6(5). The Russian will face 31st seed Flavio Cobolli of Italy in the third round.
0050 OSAKA KNOCKED OUT
Czech Karolina Muchova saw off two-time champion Naomi Osaka of Japan 6-3 7-6(5) after saving three set points in the second set.
2305 PAUL ADVANCES AS PURCELL RETIRES
Tommy Paul, the 14th seed, advanced to the third round for the first time after his Australian opponent Max Purcell retired in the third set with the American leading 7-5 6-0 6-1.

Sixth seed Jessica Pegula overcame fellow American and former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin 7-6(4) 6-3 to reach the third round.
1826 SWIATEK CRUISES INTO THIRD ROUND, RYBAKINA WITHDRAWS
Top seed Iga Swiatek had no trouble claiming a crushing 6-0 6-1 victory over Japan's Ena Shibahara in just over an hour.
Former Wimbledon champion and fourth seed Elena Rybakina withdrew from the tournament due to injury ahead of her second round match against French qualifier Jessika Ponchet.
1735 PAOLINI THROUGH TO THIRD ROUND AFTER PLISKOVA RETIRES
Czech Karolina Pliskova, the 2016 finalist, retired hurt in the first game of her second round match against Italian fifth seed Jasmine Paolini. The French Open and Wimbledon finalist will face Yulia Putintseva next.
1735 THOMSON UPSETS HURKACZ
Australian Jordan Thomson defeated Polish seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(2) 6-1 7-5. Hurkacz has lost the second round of the U.S. Open for a sixth consecutive year.
Thompson faces Italian 30th seed Matteo Arnaldi next in the third round.
1730 PUTINTSEVA BEATS XINYU
Kazakh 30th seed Putintseva beat Wang Xinyu of China, 6-1 7-6(4) to reach the third round.
1718 MACHAC THROUGH TO THE THIRD ROUND
Unseeded Czech Tomas Machac defeated American Sebastian Korda 6-4 6-2 6-4, much to the crowd's dismay. Korda, the 16th seed, struggled through an elbow injury during the match.
1640 SHNAIDER DOWNS TAUSON
Russian 18th seed Diana Shnaider had little trouble defeating Clara Tauson of Denmark 6-4 6-4 to reach the third round.
1627 KALINSKAYA BEATS BONDAR
Russian 15th seed Anna Kalinskaya defeated Hungarian Anna Bondar 6-2 6-4 to reach the third round of the U.S. Open for the first time in her career.

Play began under pleasant skies in New York, with the temperature hovering around 24 degrees Celsius (75.2°F) with humidity at 61%.
Czech Republic's Tomas Machac began his second round match against American 16th seed Sebastian Korda at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
