Three members of Victorville family killed in crash on the 210 Freeway in Rialto

A Victorville mother and two of her teenage children were killed in an SUV crash along the 210 Freeway in Rialto as they were returning home from catering an event for their family business over the weekend, authorities said.

Maria Concepcion Ortiz De Santiago, 57, was killed in Sunday crash, along with 18-year-old Steven Banuelos Ortiz and 19-year-old Jacqueline Alexandra Banuelos Ortiz, according to San Bernardino County coroner's officials and family.

The family members were traveling west in the right-hand lane in a 2005 Cadillac Escalade at an unknown speed just prior to the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.

"For reasons still under investigation, the Cadillac unsafely turned to the left, across all westbound lanes of SR-210, toward the No. 1 lane," the agency said in a written statement.

Officials said the SUV then veered back to the right, toward the freeway shoulder.

"The Cadillac entered the descending dirt embankment, in a northwesterly direction. Subsequently, the Cadillac crashed into a tree and overturned," the statement said. "As a result of this crash all occupants within the vehicle were fully ejected."

Paramedics pronounced the mother and son dead at the scene, coroner's records show. Jacqueline was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Investigators had yet to determine who had been driving the SUV, CHP Officer Ivan Sandoval said.

    'They were kind souls'

The family members were on their way home from catering an event when the crash took place, according to son and older brother to the victims, Jonathan Noriega.

Maria had always loved to cook traditional Mexican food, he said. After she and her family moved to Victorville from Ontario in 2010, she began filling food orders for friends and neighbors.

The business had recently begun seeing growing success and catering larger events, Noriega said.

Jacqueline and Steven, who were less than a year apart in age, "were extremely close," their brother said. "You couldn't take one away from the other," he added.

An argument with one of the siblings was sure to become an argument with both, he recalled. "They would defend each other through anything."

Jacqueline had recently graduated High School, and Steven was expected to shortly, Noriega said.

Both enjoyed training in Muay Thai kickboxing and wrestling with Noriega at local martial arts studio

"They really loved their family and they really loved their friends," he said. "They were kind souls."

In addition to Noriega, the family members are also left behind another daughter and older sister, Samantha, according to the brother.

Community donations poured in to a fundraiser established online at GoFundMe.com to help with funeral expenses.
