Southern Minnesota went from one of its coldest winters ever to its warmest on record in just a year’s time. Then, a yearslong drought came to an end a month or two before this weekend’s disaster.

The Faribault Mill didn’t face flooding in the basement nearly as bad as previous floods, due to a berm installed in 2019 that held back much of the water from this weekend. The water rose to record levels, as seen here Monday morning. (Colton Kemp/southernminn.com)
