Waters receding, but flooding issues will persist; League of Women voters forum reveals differences between candidates
Despite the recession of the water levels along the Cannon River over the last 24 hours, the City of Northfield and Rice County are still experiencing flood conditions and mitigation efforts are still underway. Many residences and businesses are still working on mitigation efforts. There are many residential and property-owning members of the community just beginning to plan their cleanup efforts in the aftermath of the flood.

The Northfield City Council held an emergency meeting yesterday afternoon and extended the Citywide State of Emergency through July 9th. The time was increased from the initial three-day period to allow for several short-term and long-term flood mitigation measures to be taken. City staff is now authorized to acquire whatever materials and services might be needed to preserve life and property. According to the resolution, this includes the performance of public work, entering into contracts, the incurring of obligations, employment of temporary workers, rental of equipment, purchase of supplies and materials, limitations upon tax levies, and the appropriation and expenditure of public funds.
The Salvation Army rolls out emergency flood relief in Cook: food, hydration and flood kits
The Northern Division of The Salvation Army has deployed teams to multiple locations in Minnesota as flooding begins to take a toll in towns like Cook, Faribault and Magnolia. A Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team is currently serving Faribault in Rice County, providing roughly 150 meals a day to displaced residents who’ve been moved to a temporary shelter. Another team is distributing flood clean-up kits to affected residents in Magnolia in Rock County.
Paying attention closely to the severe possibility tonight
9:30PM Update- Temperatures still are in the 80s even at this hour and still feeling like the 90s and even triple digits in some locations. The good news is that it is looking very likely the line of strong to severe thunderstorms will stay to the east of the area and into Wisconsin overnight tonight. There still could be an isolated strong to severe storm overnight in the area, but anything widespread will stay to the east. This is good news as we do not need any additional rainfall nor any severe weather. LeSueur and Rice County though have been placed are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 4am as they look to be just on the western edge of the line of storms that develop overnight.

Nearly two dozen city streets, county highways and township roads remain closed throughout Rice County due to floodwaters. The number seems unprecedented. Closures include several streets in Faribault along the Cannon and Straight Rivers. More rain is possible later today. Exactly what we don’t need.
