    Girls basketball: Cameron earns playoff win over Cadott

    A strong close to the first half helped the Cameron girls basketball team build up a double-digit lead in a 59-44 win over Cadott during Friday's Division 4 regional semifinal contest in Cameron.

    The third-seeded Comets (20-5) head to No. 2 Phillips on Saturday for a regional title game.

    In Friday's win, Bailey Olson led the Comets with 18 points. Lexi Kuffel and Cora Romsos each added seven, while Olivia Leschisin and Bridgette Mohns both had six.

    Cameron was ahead by five when its defense forced eight straight stops to close the first half. This allowed the Comets to go on a 7-0 run to head into the break in front 28-16.

    Sixth-seeded Cadott (12-14) had narrowed its deficit to seven after 3 minutes of the second half, but Cameron came right back on a 12-2 run. After Maddie Severt knocked in a 3-pointer and then Kuffel quickly got a steal and fast break layup, the Comets led 44-27. Cameron led by as much as 20 points with a little less than 5 minutes left in the game.

    Cadott was led by 11 points from Emma Kowalczyk. The Hornets were held to 34% shooting and forced into 21 turnovers. Cameron shot 40.7% from the field and went 5 of 9 from distance.

    Cameron now heads to Phillips Saturday night looking for their first regional title since 2018. The Loggers won their regional semifinal game on Friday over Chetek-Weyerhaeuser by a 82-49 score as Philips moved to 23-2 on the season.
