Two early goals helped the Rice Lake girls soccer team earn its first Big Rivers victory on the season in a 3-1 triumph over Menomonie on Pug Lund Field on Tuesday.

Rice Lake (4-1-4, 1-1-2) scored twice in the game's first six minutes, and 36 seconds to jump ahead and led 3-0 before Menomonie (0-3-3, 0-3) got on the scoreboard. Julia Holthaus scored two of the Warriors' goals and Addison Leaf the other.

In the sixth minute of action the Warriors got a penalty kick after Natalie Nolin was taken down in the goalie box. Holthaus lined up for the penalty kick and booted the ball into the right corner for the 1-0 advantage.

Less than a minute later it was Leaf doubling the Warriors' lead. After Rice Lake took control of the ball after a goalie kick, Holthaus passed to Leaf in the center of the field. She then dribbled a couple of steps to her left and launched a left-footed kick from 20 yards out past a diving goalkeeper.

Fourteen minutes into the second half the Warriors added on. Nolin took control of a goalie kick and weaved past the Menomonie defense. Approaching the goal she initially lost possession but regathered and sent a pass over to Holthaus, who then slipped a shot inside the left post.

The Mustangs scored their lone goal in the 58th minute. Rice Lake goalkeeper Ayla Zuzek made four saves.

The Warriors comeback attempt was ended with the tying run just 90 feet away from home in a Big Rivers loss at home to the Cardinals (5-4, 3-2).

Rice Lake (4-6, 1-4) went scoreless in the first six innings but began to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Brady Musil singled to open the seventh which brought the end of the day for Cardinal pitcher Easton Bobb, who had struck out 15 and allowed four hits in six frames.

Reliever Brayden Hagemann got a quick first two outs but the Warriors had life after a Chippewa Falls error. Tanner Koltunski dropped a single into center field to bring in Musil and Jack Larson, who had reached on the error.

Lucas Roux then followed with a liner past third base to put two on. Easton Stone was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and a walk by Kalvin Kelsey made it 4-3. The game ended with a ground out to shortstop as the Warriors stranded the game-tying runner on third base.

Roux paced the offense going 3 for 3. Koltunski went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

The Warriors cut their deficit to two runs in the fifth in Thursday's conference matchup in Rice Lake, but the Cardinals came back with runs the following inning and held off the Warrior comeback attempt.

A three-run fifth for Rice Lake (8-4, 4-3) had the Warriors within striking distance of Big Rivers leader Chippewa Falls (11-1, 6-1). Madi Rowe blasted a one-out home run to get the scoring started in the fifth. Emily Kalina followed with a single, and then Ava Anderson doubled to put two in scoring position. A two-run base hit by Aubrey Musil had the Warriors within 8-6 as the game headed to the sixth.

The Cardinals came back with three of their own in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and then a Warriors error that kept the inning alive for a run-scoring double.

The Warriors' other three runs were scored in the third. Chippewa Falls had taken a 7-0 advantage after two in the first and five in the second. With two down in the third, Rowe singled to left and then Kalina knocked a base hit to right. Rowe beat a throw to third on Kalina's hit, which allowed Kalina to race to second. Chippewa Falls attempted to get Kalina out at second, at which time Rowe sprinted home. Anderson then powered a ball deep to center over the fence for two more Rice Lake runs.

Anderson reached base four times, on a home run, two doubles and a walk, and she drove in two and scored twice. Kalina went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two driven in, while Musil and Rowe were each 2 for 4. Musil plated two runs, and Rowe drove in one and scored twice. Veda Stenseth was also 2 for 3.

Rice Lake out hit Chippewa Falls 15 to 12 but five Warrior errors accounted for eight unearned runs against Rice Lake pitcher Kamryn Kunz. Kunz struck out four, allowed 12 hits and three earned runs in seven innings.
