Warrior wrap-up (4-30): Walk-off results in another one-run loss for Rice Lake baseball

    2024-05-01

The Rice Lake baseball team has found itself on the short end of one-run losses lately.

In front by a run heading into the bottom of the seventh, Rice Lake had Eau Claire Memorial score twice for the 8-7 walk-off victory by the Old Abes in Tuesday's conference clash in Eau Claire.

It was the fourth consecutive one-run loss by the Warriors after an 8-7 defeat to Ashland on April 20, and then losses to Chippewa Falls by scores of 4-3 and 1-0 last week.

Against the Old Abes, the Warriors (4-8, 1-6) had gone up 7-5 with runs in the top of the sixth. Eau Claire Memorial (6-5, 3-4) scored once in the bottom of the sixth to get within one but Rice Lake still led until the seventh. Easton Stone had entered in relief looking to close it out. The Old Abes had put two on with a single and walk with one out. A base hit by Jack Harris tied the game and put the winning run in scoring position. Grank Lokken then gave Eau Claire Memorial the win with a base hit to left.

The Warriors were down 5-1 when they had tied the game with a four-run third. Kalvin Kelsey had a two-run single and Brady Musil and Aaron Hoffman each had run-scoring hits.

Rice Lake was led offensively by Kelsey, who was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Hoffman went 2 for 4, while Stone reached base three times with a double and two walks. Lucas Roux had a pair of walks and scored three times.

The Warriors are scheduled to host the Old Abes Thursday.

River Falls 6, Rice Lake 4

The Warriors got home runs by Emily Kalina and Madi Rowe but their comeback fell short against the Wildcats on Tuesday in River Falls.

Rice Lake (9-7, 4-5) found itself trailing 6-0 after four innings but rallied with a single tally in the fifth before breaking through with three in the sixth.

Rowe hit a solo home run for the Warriors' first run in the fifth. In the sixth Emily Saffert was hit by pitch and then Rowe singled to bring up Kalina. She sent a ball over the fence for the three-run home run to cut the Warriors' deficit to two.

The Warriors had put two runners on base with one out to bring up the top of the lineup in the seventh, but River Falls (5-10, 1-8) got Rowe to fly out and Kalina to ground out to end the game.

Rice Lake got multi-hit games from Rowe, Kalina, Ava Anderson and Addison Seelow. Kalina drove in three runs and scored once. Rowe had an RBI and two runs scored.

The Warriors had 11 hits and drew seven walks but left 12 runners on base and had a pair caught stealing.

In six innings in the circle for the Warriors, Kamryn Kunz struck out nine and walked two. She allowed seven hits and one earned run.

Rice Lake is scheduled to host River Falls Thursday.

The Warrior girls were led by Jaida Perry placing runner-up in the shot put at 30-8 and Ellie Strand finishing right behind her at 29-8.5 for third.
