    Track and field: Cameron girls win regional title

    With four first-place and 14 top-four finishes, the Cameron girls track and field team won Monday's Division 3 regional at Webster.

    Inez Schmidt won two events, while Lauren Pearson added another, and they also formed half of the 1,600-meter relay took first.

    The Comets scored 131 points to top the girls standings, well in front of Grantsburg's 82.5 in second. The Cameron boys were led by runners-up finishes from the 400 and 800 relays and finished eighth in the standings.

    Cameron is the host of Thursday's Division 3 sectional meet.

    Schmidt won the 800 in 2:24.17 and also took the title in the 1,600 after a time of 5:20.37. She was also runner-up for the pole vault after clearing 10 feet to increase her Cameron record. Also advancing to sectionals in the pole vault was Hailey Hince after she was fourth at a height of 9-0.

    Pearson won the high jump after clearing 5-2, and she long jumped 17-2 for second. Right behind Pearson in second for the high jump was Cyleigh Cherney at a height of 4-10.

    Kuffel improved upon her school records in the 200 and 400. She was second at 57.96 for the 400 and in the 200 she finished in 26.38 for third. Also advancing to sectionals were Katie Shilts, who was runner-up at 32-10 for the triple jump, Anna Baribeau after she was fourth at 31-11.25 for the shot put and Jordyn Lundequam after taking fourth at 13.46 in the 100.

    The girls 800 and 1,600 relays each set school record times. The 1,600 relay of Kuffel, Pearson, Schmidt and Bridgette Mohns improved their record time to 4:02.07 for first. In the 800 relay it was Maddie Severt, Shilts, Pearson and Lundequam taking second in 1:46.3, a school record time. The previous mark of 1:47.18 was set in 2017 by Tori Gerber, Kiara Hestad, Payton Sevals and Carli Wanink.

    Caden Anderson, Julien Foster, Cole Peterson and Aiden Golat gave the Comets a runner-up finish in the 400 relay in 45.32. Anderson, Foster, Peterson and Jax Manor were second in the 800 relay in 1:34.04.

    Individually the Cameron boys had Garrik Block and Tyler Phillips take second and third in the shot put. Block had a top toss of 43-8.5 and Phillips was 1 foot behind him. In the triple jump Manor was third after leaping a distance of 39-10.75.

    The Comet boys 1,600 relay also advances after taking fourth as Anderson, Peterson, Colt Mikolon and Manor finished in 3:38.57.
