Remembering the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who fell in service to their country is the reason for Memorial Day, but people also can honor their memories by appreciating active service members and nurturing those who will serve in the future, said Rice Lake Chief of Police Steve Roux at Veterans Memorial City Park on Monday morning.

“The sole purpose of today is to remember the fallen — period,” Roux said as he gave Memorial Day remarks before a crowd of patriots observing the ceremony conducted by Rice Lake American Legion Post 87.

It is paramount that the men and women did not die in vain while defending the nation’s freedom, Roux said. Drawing a parallel with Rice Lake law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty, the chief went on to say people must continue to speak their names and talk about their experiences so they are never forgotten.

The U.S. is a great country because brave men and woman served a national cause on a daily basis, and people must resist the urge to take this for granted, Roux said.

“Hard work, pain and sacrifice of our military heroes have provided us the freedoms other countries don’t have,” he said. “We are truly blessed.”

Roux also said Memorial Day was a time to appreciate those actively serving in the Armed Forces and those who served before them. A simple thank you or small gesture of appreciation can go a long way, and everyone must take care of veterans and help them strive for resiliency if they suffer physical or mental ailments.

Memorial Day also is prime time to recruit the younger generation into the Armed Forces and a life of service to their community or country, Roux said.

“I encourage everyone here today to promote our military and our law enforcement service going forward,” he said.
