    Barron County surrounded by end-of-summer festivals in every direction

    Labor Day weekend, summer’s last hurrah, will be celebrated in communities all around the edges of Barron County — the 101st Fair at Ridgeland on the border of Dunn County, the 76th Booster Days at Weyerhaeuser in Rusk County, the 32nd Trout Fest at Exeland in Sawyer County and the 45th Town and Country Days in Shell Lake in Washburn County.

    Ridgeland’s 101st Fair

    On the edge of Barron and Dunn counties, the 101st Ridgeland Fair begins Friday with a demo derby at 7 p.m. at the grandstand. Cost is $15 for ages 11 and under, $5 for ages 12 and up.

    Saturday begins with a fun run at 8 a.m. and tractor ride at 8:30 a.m., continuing with a bean bag tournament and car show, both at 11 a.m. A street dance featuring the music of Lassos & Lace runs from 8 p.m. to midnight.

    Sunday’s activities start with a church service at 10 a.m., and state pedal pull at 11 a.m., while at the grandstand will be the National Tractor Pullers Association truck and tractor pull at 7 p.m. Cost is $20 for ages 13 and up, $5 for ages 12 and under.

    Labor Day on Monday gets underway with a horse pull at 9 a.m. at a cost of $5 for ages 13 and up, $3 for ages 12 and under. A parade will make its way through the village at 1 p.m. with music in the tent at 3 p.m.

    New this year a $30 wristband will be sold for general admission into all three grandstand events — the demo derby, truck and tractor pull, and horse pull.

    All weekend long, Stipes Shows will offer games, rides and concessions on the midway. Wristbands are $20 for rides Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

    Weyerhaeuser’s 76th Booster Days

    The Weyerhaeuser Area Community Club invites the public to the 76th annual Weyerhaeuser Booster Days coming up Friday-Sunday. It features the traditional games, refreshments, food and music and new highlights including performances by Chris Kroeze on Friday evening to start off festivities and the Wissota Skydivers on Sunday afternoon to conclude it.

    Also observed during festivities will be the 140th anniversary of the village of Weyerhaeuser and Kramer Well Drilling’s 100th year of business operations in the village.

    Singer and songwriter Chris Kroeze of Barron will perform Friday from 7:30-10:30 p.m. with no cover charge.

    The lineup of activities on Saturday includes a pancake breakfast and bake sale at the United Methodist Church from 7:30-11 a.m., the start of a wood bat softball tournament at 8 a.m., volleyball and pickleball at 9 a.m., open house at the depot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., craft sale and blacksmith demonstration from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., garbage pail golf from 1-3 p.m., kids activities from 1-5 p.m. and live music by Dylan Martinson from 7-10 p.m.

    The final day of the fest starts with a French toast breakfast at the VFW Hall from 8-10:30 a.m., and includes a softball tournament and run. An open house at the depot is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., outdoor Polka Mass at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church is at 10 a.m., chicken dinner at the church and barbecue chicken dinner at the park, both at 11 a.m. The kiddie parade starts at 12:30 p.m. followed by the street parade at 12:45 p.m. Music by the Craig Ebel & DyVersaCo polka band from runs 2:30-6:30 p.m. with no cover charge, a performance by the Wissota Skydivers is at 3:30 p.m. and the fest concluding with the Marshall Star Band, with no cover charge, from 7:30-11 p.m.

    Exeland’s 32nd Trout Fest

    The Exeland Trout Festival, sponsored by the Exeland Rod & Gun Club, kicks off its festivities for the 32nd year Friday at 5 p.m. with a co-ed softball game, cribbage tournament, bean bags and a trout fish plate. Presentation of the medallion award winner is at 7 p.m.

    Saturday’s fest events begin with a trout fishing contest. Registration begins at 7 a.m. A pancake breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Rod & Gun Clubhouse. The Methodist Church offers a salad luncheon at 11 a.m. Softball, volleyball, bean bag tournaments, open horseshoe pits and kid’s inflatables will be at the Sports Center all day. A trap shooting contest between the Exeland Rod Gun Club vs. Bruce High School is at 2 p.m. at the club racetrack. Food is available all day at one of the two concession stands.

    The Exeland Siri Strong Rail Trail 5K Run is at 9 a.m., with registration at the pavilion at 8 a.m., and a $20 entry fee. A race for little kids follows at 10 a.m. Both events are at the Sports Center.

    Also at the Sports Center, music by the Gators Band is from 12:30– 4:30 p.m. with the Queen and Princess Pageant following at 5 p.m. One of nine queen contestants will be crowned Trout Fest Queen.

    Saturday’s events conclude at the Sports Center with music by Chris Kroeze of Barron from 7-10 p.m.

    On Sunday, the second day of a pancake breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. The parade starts on Main Street at high noon. Following the parade watch the finals of the softball and volleyball tourneys at the Sports Center. Grab a chicken dinner or other food and listen to the good music performed by the Big Fish band. The Jump River Mow Masters lawn mower races begin at 2 p.m.

    Shell Lake’s 45th Town & Country Days

    The 45th annual Town and Country Days in Shell Lake begins Friday with a 3-8 p.m. craft fair at the pavilion grounds, 4-7 p.m. Lion’s Club’s Lake Superior Whitefish Fry at the community center and 7 p.m. truck pull.

    Saturday’s activities include a walk, drive or fly-in breakfast from 7:30-11 a.m., lake run at 8 a.m., and 3 vs. 3 basketball tournament at 9 a.m. at the Shell Lake High School. The fastest kid race — a 40-yard dash — is at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Chocolate Fest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Historical Society, the Tom Scott Memorial Regatta, and a kids pedal tractor pull, both at 1 p.m. DJ entertainment by Cruisin Tunes is from 6-8 p.m. at the pavilion.

    Sunday wraps up the fest with a community worship service at 10 a.m. at the pavilion, tractor pull at 11 a.m., kiddie parade at noon, grand parade at 12:30 p.m., a show of cars, trucks, bikes and antique tractors from 2-6 p.m. and door prize drawings at 4:15 p.m.
