Three runners had top-25 finishes as the Warrior high school cross country teams ran the Rice Lake Invitational on Tuesday on the campus of UW-Eau Claire — Barron County.

Carter Kucko led the Warriors in finishing 10th in the boys 5-kilometer race as he completed the course in 16 minutes, and 56.1.

"He's trying some different things as he goes along this season, and overall a really good race," coach David Dickey said. "Tenth place, you can't argue with that, and he's in a really good spot in our section."

In the girls race Abby Britton placed 11th with a time of 21:07.5. Adding a top-25 finish was Clara Drost, who was 22nd in 21:53.7. Britton and Drost led the Warrior girls to sixth place out of 24 teams, while the Rice Lake boys were 14th of 27 teams.

"We’re midway through the season so we’re definitely pushing through some stuff," Dickey said. "They’re all working hard, pushing through tired legs at times, and the heat doesn't help, but overall it was a good race. It was a good race for everyone."

Temperatures topped 80 degrees during the races but the Rice Lake girls had six of seven runners record their top times of the season. In addition to Britton running a season best, Morgan Stephens was 43rd with a season-best mark of 22:46.2 Others with their best times of the season were Mari Gilbert (24:25.2), Mindy Barta (24:35.2), Anna Lipke (25:08.2) and Elleanor Hietala (25:46.4).

"They all ran good races, for most of them they ran the best race of the year for themselves," Dickey said. "We have a couple of new girls on the varsity squad, trying a few different tactics as we go along here. They all ran well — there's room for improvement for everybody, but we're in a good point of the season where that's OK and we're still working towards that finish."

Austin Prince cut off time from his best run of the season as he was 35th in 18:31.3. Also setting a season-best time was Jacob Jondreau, who finished in 21:23. Peter Montgomery was the third fastest to the finish line with a mark of 20:18.3. Simon Naiberg completed the course in 22:26.5, Porter Corbin in 23:13.2 and Nathan Jondreau in 24:45.8.

"Jacob improved quite a bit this race, especially from Spooner, and Austin had his best race," Dickey said. "Those guys both ran well. I think overall the guys ran good races."

The Warriors return to action Friday at the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota.
