Warrior wrap-up (10-7): Rice Lake tennis advances 4 flights to sectionals

The Rice Lake girls tennis team has advanced four flights to sectionals after competing in Monday's Division 2 subsectional at Baldwin-Woodville.

Rice Lake had Verca Skorpikova, Karlee Seifert and Julia Thompson qualify in singles play, while the No. 1 doubles team of Hannah Yeager and Paisley Alton also advanced.

To move on to sectionals the No. 1 singles and doubles flights have to reach the semifinals, while singles No. 2, 3 and 4, and doubles No. 2 and 3 must reach the finals of the bracket to reach sectionals.

Skorpikova advances to sectionals after winning her first-round match at No. 1 singles. The exchange student from Czech Republic won 6-0, 6-2 against Brooke McDonald of Osceola. The victory improved Skorpikova's record to 4-2 in singles play this year.

At No. 2 Seifert had little trouble winning two matches on the day to improve to 9-7 on the season. The junior earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ayden Flaherty of Mondovi and then defeated Amery's Charlotte Stewart 6-0, 6-1.

Thompson was also a two-time winner on the day and is now 6-12 this year. She took down Bloomer's Lacie Grant 7-6 (5) and 6-2, and in the semifinals the Rice Lake senior earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Baldwin-Woodville's Katie Kroening.

At No. 1 doubles seniors Yeager and Alton needed one win to keep their season going, and they did just that, defeating Barron's Zoey Frandsen and Graycin Miller 7-5, 6-2. Playing doubles together, Yeager and Alton are 3-11.

Having their season come to a conclusion were Halle Husak at No. 3 singles, the No. 2 doubles team of senior Samantha Windorski and sophomore Audriana Schultz, and the No. 3 team of seniors Nicole Schieffer and Reagan Donahue.

Husak had her season come to an end with a loss to the top-ranked player in the No. 3 singles flight. Husak had begun the day in winning 6-2, 6-3 over Mondovi's Julia Jardine, but in the semifinals her opponent was Baldwin-Woodville's Jacque Kroening, who sports a 24-2 record. Husak had a competitive match, but Kroening moved on in taking the match 6-2, 7-5. Husak completes her junior season with an 8-9 record.

Windorski and Schultz started the day with a victory in topping an Osceola doubles team 6-1, 6-3. In the semifinals they battled in a three-set contest with Baldwin-Woodville's team of Lola Peavey and Evelyn Dietzman. The Rice Lake duo took the first set 6-3, but Blackhawks evened the match with a 6-3 set two win. The tiebreaker went to Peavey and Dietzman 10-5. Windorski and Schultz were 3-10 this season on the court together.

Playing at No. 3 doubles, Schieffer and Donahue won their first match 6-1, 6-4 over a doubles team from Osceola, but in the semifinals the Rice Lake duo came up short 2-6, 2-6 to Amery's Olivia Chavez and Addie Gould, who had improved their record to 11-2 on the season. Schieffer and Donahue ended the year with a record of 2-6 as doubles teammates.

In the team standings at subsectionals Amery topped the leaderboard at 22 points, with Baldwin-Woodville two points back, and Rice Lake in third at 18.

Advancing to the state tournament are Spooner and Hayward after scores of 373 and 378, respectively. Colfax/Elk Mound's Belle Kongshaug, the defending Division 2 state champion, shot a four over par 76 to top the individual leaderboard. Also heading to state individually are St. Croix Central's Addison Kofal and Ellsworth's Lexi Marks.
