Drop boxes not being used in some GOP parts of state
Despite the Supreme Court decision in July restoring local clerks’ ability to have unstaffed absentee ballot drop boxes, some smaller and more rural communities in GOP parts of the state are choosing not to use them this fall. Man pleaded not guilty to threatening officer
An Oshkosh man with a history of disorderly conduct in a number of Wisconsin counties pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the accusation that he threatened Rice Lake police officers who responded to incidents of alleged harassment in a city park. Jason T. Stamper, 51, was charged on July 24 in Barron County Circuit Court with felony threatening a law enforcement officer. If convicted on this count, the defendant faces a maximum penalty of a $10,000 fine and six years in prison. In addition, Stamper is facing a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct plus two more of bail jumping. A harassment charge, which is a forfeiture, also was filed in Barron County. Stamper pleaded not guilty on Friday to all charges, and he is being held in Barron County Jail on a $500 cash bond. A trial by jury has been scheduled for Nov. 11.

After a first half with few plays on offense, the Rice Lake High School football team used a second-half drive to get its momentum going, outscoring Menomonie 22-6 after the break in the Warriors’ 36-19 Big Rivers Conference win at Don and Nona Williams Stadium in Menomonie on Friday. Man pleads guilty to burglary
A former Rice Lake man has pleaded guilty to a single criminal charge in a case in which he was accused of breaking into a storage unit and stealing items. Michael R. Melendez, 28, was charged on Feb. 14, 2023, in Barron County Circuit Court with felony burglary and two misdemeanors of theft of movable property and criminal damage to property, all as parties to a crime. An arrest warrant had been issued the same day charges were filed, but Melendez didn’t appear in court until May 1, when he appeared by video from the Eau Claire County Jail. He is currently incarcerated at Dodge Correctional Institution. Melendez pleaded guilty on Friday to the burglary charge, but the two misdemeanors were dismissed but read into the record. When he is sentenced on Oct 30, he faces a maximum penalty of a $25,000 fine and 12½ years in prison.

The Chronotype has been published since 1874, making it the oldest continually operated business in Barron County. In August 2014, the company was purchased by Adams Publishing Group, from third generation family ownership. The Early Bird is a free circulation newspaper/advertising shopper published on Fridays.
