Richardson police use a drone to help catch a suspect

The Richardson Police Department says it recently captured a man suspected of stealing a car by using an aerial drone.

Officers had pulled over the stolen vehicle in a neighborhood when the driver jumped out and began to run in between some houses.

An officer deployed the aerial drone he had in the back seat of his patrol car. The camera on the drone spotted the suspect hiding behind the fence of a home. The drone operator relayed that information to other officers in the field who tracked him down and took him into custody.

Richardson police say the "use of drones has proven to be invaluable for helping with apprehensions and ensuring officer safety."
