A Hamlet man will likely spend the rest of his natural life in prison after being convicted last week for offenses committed in 2019. Kurtis Madsen, 31, of Hamlet received more than 100 years in prison after assaulting two children ages 5 and 7 years old, multiple times over a sustained period, which came to an end in November of 2019 after an investigation by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department.

FUNdamentals Camp celebrates 10th anniversary
Hundreds of area athletes received a few pointers from a Super Bowl champion while participating in last Saturday’s 10th annual Dannel Ellerbe FUNdamentals Camp. Ellerbe, a former Richmond Senior High School athlete and two-time Super Bowl champion with 2013 Baltimore Ravens and the 2018 Philadelphia Eagles, returned to his alma mater for a free camp catering to athletes of all ages and skill levels.

HAMLET – Hamlet Post 49 remains undefeated in conference play after halting a seventh-inning rally by Hope Mill Post 32 during Wednesday’s 7-5 victory. An early offensive explosion by the 49ers, and a strong performance by starter Jason Walker gave Hamlet all of the distance they needed to pick up their 11th victory of the season as they enter the final month of play.
CTE camp inspires future firefighter to pursue passion
Area kids got their first taste of a career in firefighting during the Richmond County School District Career and Technical Education Camp. As part of the camp, students learned the basics of firefighting with the lessons gradually becoming more difficult before seeing real applications of the lessons they learned during a visit to the Hamlet Fire Department.
Project Elijah plans for July 2 courthouse march, sit-in
Members of the group Project Elijah plan to hold a sit-in Tuesday, July 2 ahead of the upcoming Richmond County Commission meeting. Local organization pleads with commissioners to assist in animal care
The Concerned Citizens for Our Shelter Animals continue pressing county leaders for more involvement in animal care at the Richmond County Animal Shelter. Just one month removed from broaching the subject with Richmond County Commissioners last month, CCOSA representative Christie Newton returned with a cadre of fellow CCOSA members, each wearing red CCOSA T-shirts to show commissioners their effort to change animal care in Richmond County is a community effort and not just a pair of representatives.
