‘Y’ALL MEANS ALL’: Richmond County marchers call for equality, accountability in representation
ROCKINGHAM — Just days after the end of PRIDE month, several protesters marched through downtown carrying signs in support of the queer community. The group met Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot across from the Richmond County Judicial Center, where the Board of Commissioners was set to hold its monthly meeting hours later.

A Hamlet man will likely spend the rest of his natural life in prison after being convicted last week for offenses committed in 2019. Kurtis Madsen, 31, of Hamlet received more than 100 years in prison after assaulting two children ages 5 and 7 years old, multiple times over a sustained period, which came to an end in November of 2019 after an investigation by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department.
OPIOID EPIDEMIC: Teen dies of overdose; Richmond County regains highest fentanyl-involved death rate
ROCKINGHAM — A 15-year-old girl was among the Richmond County overdose patients attended to by FirstHealth EMS in May. Her case was the only fatality for the month. Records from the Sandhills Opioid Response Consortium, presented to the Drug Endangered Family Task Force on June 26, show FirstHealth EMS responded to 19 overdose calls.
RCSO: Man breaking into building caught, detained by homeowner
HAMLET — Fishing poles have been returned to their owner after the alleged thief was caught trying to break in again. According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded Wednesday to a home on Gibbons Street, north of Hamlet, after the homeowner caught someone breaking into a building and had the suspect, 41-year-old Ronald Hill of Hamlet, detained on the ground.
Sex offender charged with registration violations in Richmond County
ROCKINGHAM — A convicted sex offender is facing several charges related to registration. Richmond County Jail records show 47-year-old Jonathan Verneil Cooper was booked on June 27, and is charged with two counts of failing to register as a sex offender and one count of failing to report a new address as a sex offender.

Rockingham man charged with attempted murder in dump truck dispute
LAUREL HILL — A violent dispute over money and a dump truck has reportedly landed a man in the Richmond County jail with an attempted murder charge. According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call of shots being fired at a home on Rockingham Road, in the southeastern area of the county near Laurel Hill, on June 21.
Meth, marijuana reportedly found in probationer’s Richmond County home
ROCKINGHAM — A man on probation is currently facing additional charges after a search reportedly turned up a gun and multiple drugs at his home. According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, a probation search was executed June 25 at a home on John Chavis Road, off of County Home Road between Rockingham and Hamlet.
Rockingham lowers property tax rate, increases sanitation fees
ROCKINGHAM — The property tax rate in the county seat is dropping from what it’s been in years — but not quite as low as originally hoped. The Rockingham City Council had a choice of two budget’s to adopt on Tuesday: one with a tax rate of $0.53 on $100 of valuation; the other at $0.55.
