LAUREL HILL — A violent dispute over money and a dump truck has reportedly landed a man in the Richmond County jail with an attempted murder charge.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call of shots being fired at a home on Rockingham Road, in the southeastern area of the county near Laurel Hill, on June 21.

The alleged victim reportedly told deputies that he had gotten to an argument over money with 51-year-old Adrian Shaw, of Rockingham. Shaw had reportedly refused to return the victim’s dump truck.

According to a press release issued June 25, the victim had gone to retrieve the dump truck and Shaw began arguing and firing shots into the truck while the victim was inside.

Investigators were contacted and took over the case, charging Shaw with: attempted first-degree murder; discharging a weapon into an occupied property; and altering, stealing or destroying criminal evidence.

No details were given related to the latter charge.

The press release states Shaw was initially booked into the Richmond County Jail with no bond. Online jail records show he is being held on a $500,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court July 11.

Records appear to show Shaw has no other pending charges or prior convictions in North Carolina.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
