RICHMOND HILL, Ga. (WSAV)- Even though school is out for the summer, we are not forgetting about our local teachers.

We are honoring our newest “A Banana for the Teacher” at Richmond Hill Elementary School with a stunning surprise as the school year comes to an end.

“I am completely surprised. This was very surprising. I have no words,” said second-grade teacher Sara Sylvester.

Sylvester is our newest “A Banana for the Teacher” nominee presented by the Savannah Bananas and Farah & Farah.

“What better way to give back than by honoring our teachers and giving them a little bit of gratitude just to show that we appreciate them and what they do for everyone,” said Glory Paul of Farah & Farah.

Ms. Sylvester has a fresh $500 in her pocket for going above and beyond every day for her classroom.

“You can do so much with $500 for a classroom. One thing that comes to my mind is books. You can buy so many books for your students with that. You can also buy so many supplies for them,” Sylvester said.

Sylvester is wrapping up her third year of teaching. For her, it was a profession that was meant to be. Some would even call it destiny.

“I got into teaching because of my first-grade teacher. When I was in first grade she not only gave me a classroom where I felt loved and supported but gave me an atmosphere where I could learn and grow as a learner, and that is something that I wanted to give my students and give them that safe place for them to learn,” said Sylvester.

“This past year has been one of my best years ever,” Sylvester said. “I’ve absolutely loved every minute of being in this classroom.”

We want to know of an educator you know who is going above and beyond and deserves to be recognized as “A Banana for the Teacher.” Click here to make your nominations today.
