The great thing about our region's economy is its diversity. Like nature itself, that diversity helps buffer it from huge swings in individual sectors. But even within that diversity, we get caught up in talking about "the economy" in broad strokes. U.S. Dept. of Labor statistics, university researchers and even employers often speak of "the workforce" in monolithic terms. The "service industry," "manufacturing," and "health care" ― some of the Savannah-area's largest employment segments ― carries within them multitudes, from janitorial staff and home health care workers to assembly lines.

Savannah State University Presidential Search Committee holds first meeting
The Savannah State University Presidential Search Committee met for the first time on Thursday, July 18 on the SSU campus to establish goals, timelines, procedures and more as the group began the process for finding a full-time President to lead the historically Black university. University System of Georgia (USG) Chancellor Sonny Perdue was in attendance, as was a representative from AGB Search, a firm hired to bring in applicants for the committee to consider before they settle on a group of three to five finalists.

As recently as Thursday, top Savannah-area Democrats took to Johnson Square to stump for the Biden-Harris 2024 ticket. By Sunday afternoon, Savannah Mayor Van Johnson, State Representative Anne Allen Westbrook, and Chatham County District 6 Commissioner Aaron "Adot" Whitely were reacting to the news that President Joseph Biden would step away from his campaign for a second term in the White House and had endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the top of the ticket.
