RICHMOND, Ind. — A Wayne County man was found guilty of murder and attempted murder following a three-day jury trial that concluded on Thursday.

According to the Richmond Police Department, a Wayne Superior Court 2 jury returned a guilty verdict against Elick T. Allen for shooting and killing 46-year-old John Day, as well as the attempted murder of John Day’s mother, 72-year-old Brenda Day.

Previous reports indicate the violence took place following an “ongoing dispute” among neighbors over a driveway. This dispute led to a physical fight before gunfire erupted, police said.

“Violence in our community will be met with unwavering resolve,” said Richmond Police Chief Kyle Weatherly. “The men and women of the Richmond Police Department stand shoulder to shoulder with the citizens of Richmond, united in our commitment to eradicate crime and build a safer, stronger community. We will not rest until justice prevails and peace is restored.”

As of the time of this article’s publication, Allen has yet to receive a sentencing charge. However, because murder is a Level 1 felony in the state of Indiana, he could face between 20 and 40 years in prison.
