    Good morning!

I know it was probably a surprise to you seeing yesterday's newsletter and not seeing me talk about the biggest news from the weekend. Or maybe it wasn't, if you've been getting my newsletter for a while and understand how early I prepare our Monday newsletters.

But I would be extremely remiss to not to bring up one of the biggest news events our country has faced in some time.

Your Tuesday Richmond weather forecast: A high of 85, low of 70. Scattered thunderstorms. ⛈

🎶 Song of the Day! 🎶

Don't forget to submit your questions for my weekly mailbox each week at eweaver@gannett.com. Help spread the word about this newsletter: Forward this email to your family and friends and encourage them to sign up here.

    Former President Donald Trump shot

Over the past three days, former U.S. President Donald Trump has been in the news for three different reasons, and it's important to highlight each one.

Inarguably, the biggest news came from Saturday when Trump was shot at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. While the investigation into the assassination attempt is still ongoing, leaders from across Indiana reacted to the news.

Secondly, a criminal case against him over his handling of classified documents was dismissed in Florida, with a federal judge ruling that the appointment of the special counsel in the case, Jack Smith, was unlawful.

Finally, on the first day of the Republican National Convention on Monday, Trump announced via his Truth Social account that he has decided on his running mate for this year's election, choosing Ohio Senator J.D. Vance.

📰 What else you should know today:

🚓 Officer Burton to be honored today: A group of motorcycle riders traveling nationwide to honor fallen police officers will be in Richmond at around 4 p.m. to pay tribute to Seara Burton.

🚫⚡ Aftermath of Sunday's storm: Cambridge City leaders are telling drivers to avoid areas with downed trees and power outages after Sunday's weather knocked out power for several residents.

Largest gathering of Catholics:What is the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis this week, and why is it happening for the first time in 83 years?

🏀 Gainbridge West:That's what's being called the Target Center in Minneapolis after Caitlin Clark and the Fever's game against the Minnesota Lynx sells out.

💵 State revenues fall short: The books on the state's fiscal year will close next week, but the report from June has revealed the state didn't collect enough taxes to meet its budget plan.
