On Wednesday night, the Richmond Community Schools Board of Trustees held its last scheduled meeting before the start of the school year, and what a meeting it was.

Along with the routine items such as donations and human resources approving staffing changes, there were three big takeaways.

First, the corporation joined a lawsuit against social media companies, alleging they play a direct role in affecting students' mental health as well as causing disruptions to the educational environment.

Second, there was much debate among board members regarding the revision of a personal communication device policy that was adopted in February, a few months before the state passed a bill that requires schools to have one.

Finally, also the result of a new law, RCS was required to revise its attendance policy to be in compliance with the state.
