Leap Day ushers in another week of music, fun, inspiration, and enlightenment in Richmond, Virginia: Satchmo, folk music, tree hugging, and faith conversations. All in “What’s Booming RVA: Leap into Richmond Events.”

“Satchmo at the Waldorf”

March 1 to April 7, at the November Theatre, Richmond

Virginia Repertory Theatre presents a one-man, three-character play with Jerold E. Solomon portraying jazz great Louis Armstrong, his manager, and musician Miles Davis. The actions takes place in 1971, in a dressing room backstage at the Empire Room of New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, four months prior to Armstrong’s death. He attempts to come to terms with his long-standing relationship with Glaser, whom he once loved like a father but now believes to have betrayed him.

Rum Ragged

March 2, 7 p.m., at The Cultural Arts Center, Glen Allen

The champions of East Coast folk music take a bold approach to the distinct folk music of their home, the Eastern Canadian island of Newfoundland. Their diverse instrumentation includes bouzouki, fiddle, bodhran, banjo, guitar, and button accordion.

Richmond Invasive Species Week

March 3 to 9, in the James River Park System

Socialize, volunteer, and learn more about efforts to remove invasive species. FREE. Kick-off event on March 3, 1 to 4 p.m., with guided walks, invasive species removal, goats and sheep. Other events throughout the week include invasive removals, nature walks, film screening, and more.

Controversy/History – Faith & Beyond: Finding Our Moral Compass

March 5, 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Valentine, Richmond

Exploring the role of faith in shaping society and discussing the challenges of building community and orienting our moral compass, plus how faith can evolve in a secular society. Panelists are Rabbi Michael Knopf of Temple Beth-El, Danita Rountree Green of Coming Together Virginia, and Jabriel Hasan, Ministry Professional & Counseling Intern. FREE.

Wild & Scenic Film Festival

March 7, 6:15 to 9 p.m., at Studio Two-Three, Richmond

One evening of top-notch, inspiring, nature-loving short films plus five days of video-on-demand access. All to benefit the Chesapeake Bay.

Difficult Conversations: Keeping Your Loved Ones Safe at Home

Feb. 29, 6 p.m., at Libbie Mill Library, Henrico

Henrico County presents a speaker series for caregivers, Feb. 29 through March 27. The series will be held 6 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 29 to March 21, at Libbie Mill Library. The series will conclude with a Senior and Caregiver Resource Expo 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, at Deep Run Recreation Center. Over 50 local providers will share available resources.
