    What’s Booming RVA: Celebrate Secretariat, Honor Vietnam Vets

    A day honoring Vietnam veterans, a day celebrating Secretariat and his new larger-than-life statue, a day of Easter finery, 10 days of food, and the musical story of Tina Turner. All in “What’s Booming RVA: Celebrate Secretariat, Honor Vietnam Vets.”

    National Vietnam War Veterans Day Open House

    March 29, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Virginia War Memorial, Richmond

    A day to honor and recognize the men and women who served in our U.S. military forces during the Vietnam War era, from November 1955 to May 1975. Including the exhibit “50 Years Beyond: The Vietnam Veteran Experience” and a film series, “Virginians at War.”

    Inaugural Chesterfield Restaurant Week

    March 29 to April 7 around Chesterfield County

    An abundance of local independent restaurants present dining specials and menu to showcase the county’s culinary diversity. Experience the county’s dynamic food and dining scene, sample dishes from some of its best restaurants, and help support Chesterfield Food Bank Outreach Center.

    Secretariat Day

    Celebrate the birthday of the legendary Triple Crown champion and the dedication ceremony for the bronze statue, “Secretariat Racing Into History.” The 21-foot-long monument depicts a larger-than-life Secretariat at a full run. This is the only monument of Secretariat in Virginia, where he was born on March 30, 1970. March 30, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Ashland.

    • Free showing of the Disney film, “Secretariat,” with welcome by Kate Chenery Tweedy and sculptor Jocelyn Russell. At Ashland Theatre at 11 a.m. at Ashland Theatre.
    • Birthday Party. Live music by local musicians, food trucks, local vendors and exhibits including a time capsule with a scroll for fans to sign for Secretariat Day; a “Kiddie Corral” with crafts, real jockey silks, racing items, and more. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Randolph-Macon Parking Lot.
    • Monument dedication ceremony. 2 p.m. the new Secretariat Reynold Family Plaza at Randolph-Macon College.
    • Jocelyn Russell and Kate Tweedy speak on “The Secretariat Monument’s Journey to Ashland.” 3:15 p.m. at Ashland Theatre.

    Easter on Parade

    March 31, 1 to 5 p.m., on Monument between Allen and Davis, Richmond

    It’s back! Don your finest Easter attire, plus hats and bonnets and bunny ears – for yourself and your dog – and be part of the annual parade down Monument Avenue. People and Pet Bonnet Contest at Allen and Monument. Kids’ activities, live music, arts and crafts, vendors, and smiles. FREE.

    “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical”

    April 2 to 7 at Altria Theater, Richmond

    An uplifting comeback story, “Tina – The Tina Turner Musical” is the inspiring journey of a woman who broke barriers, won 12 Grammy Awards, and became the Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll. Set to the pulse-pounding soundtrack of her most beloved hits, this Broadway in Richmond performance will entertain and inspire.
