    What’s Booming RVA: A Global Week

    Celebrate the cultures of Asian Americans, Latino Americans, and Americana, and empathize with Jewish challenges in 1905 Russia. All in “What’s Booming RVA: A Global Week.”

    Also check out the ongoing exhibitions Samurai Armor at the VMFA and Indigenous Perspectives at the Library of Virginia.

    “Fiddler on the Roof”

    May 2 to 5 at Perkinson Center, Chester

    Broken Leg Theater presents the entertaining and moving musical. Featuring Tevye, a poor small-town milkman in Russia, and his wife and five daughters face the tensions of traditional values versus changing social mores alongside the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia.

    Asian American Celebration

    May 4, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, Richmond

    Dance, music, and martial arts, a kids’ village with traditional games, hands-on activities, and cultural booths, merchandise and authentic dishes prepared by community members, dishes unavailable at local restaurants. The following Asian communities are participating in the 26th annual event: Afghan, Bangladeshi, Bhutanese, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Lebanese, Malaysian, Nepali, Myanmar (Burmese), Pakistani, Singaporean, Thai, and Vietnamese.

    Richmond Bluegrass Jam

    May 4, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., at American Legion Post 354, Midlothian

    Featuring 14 of the region’s best bluegrass and Americana bands on multiple stages, including Slack Family Bluegrass Band, The Hot Seats, Tara Mills Band, Garden Variety String Band, Cary Street Ramblers, and more. Plus local craft beverages, food trucks, and kids activities. All to raise money for military veterans and their families. FREE, but donations encouraged.

    ¿Qué Pasa?

    May 4, noon to 8 p.m., on Brown’s Island and Tredegar Street, Richmond

    The Latino festival serves up an abundance of music, food and beverages (more than a dozen vendors), culture, arts, and fun. More than a dozen entertainment options range from River City Rueda Cuban dance group, Capoeira Angola Liberation Movement, Kadencia Afro-Puerto Rican music, Group Etnia music of the Andes Perú, The Latin Ballet of Virginia, and more.

    Bio Ritmo Cinco de Mayo Celebration

    May 5, 6 p.m., at Ember Music Hall, Richmond

    Dance the night away with the beats of Bio Ritmo. The 10-piece salsa band with ties to Puerto Rico has been based out of Richmond for more than 30 years. The fusion music blends salsa, cumbia, and Latin jazz, for “Ritmo de Mayo”!
