Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Richmond School Board on Monday adopted a clear backpack policy for students effective July 1.

Superintendent Jason Kamras and board members said they are committed to providing clear backpacks to every child who can’t afford one.

The Board also debated adding weapons detectors to elementary schools, which are already in place at middle and high schools in the city. County leaders decided more research was needed and held off on making a decision about using metal detectors at more schools.

Back in March, there was an incident where a three-year-old boy brought a loaded gun to Maymont Preschool. Leaders say the responsibility to keep students safe and guns out of school is a shared one.
