    Richmond's newest park

Dock Street Park, Richmond's newest riverfront park , opens Saturday.

Why it matters: The once vacant site was said to have inspired William Byrd to name Richmond after the city in England from his 18th century perch atop Libby Hill.

Zoom in: Saturday's opening is sort of a soft opening and coincides with the city's third annual Jubilation in June Festival , city parks spokesperson Tamara Jenkins tells Axios.

    • The weekend-long Jubilation will be at Dogwood Dell on Friday and Sunday.
    • But Saturday it moves to Intermediate Terminal with the kids zone inside Dock Street Park. City reps will be onsite asking locals what they'd like to see in the space, Jenkins says.

Plus, rapper Talib Kweli will be headlining with other performances from Rodney Stith, DJ Prolific, and the Trademark Band.

    • The Jubilation festivities start at 3:30pm and end with fireworks at around 9:15pm.

What they're saying: "This is sort of phase one of the park. There will be more there in the future," Josh Stutz, executive director of Friends of the James River Park , tells Axios.

    • "The city will be conducting a survey and public engagement process to learn more about what the public wants to see from the future of the park."

What's next: Future plans for Dock Street Park include a launch spot for kayaks and canoes, a new connection for the Capital Trail off of busy Dock Street and the opening of the adjacent James A. Buzzard River Education Center .
