Ahead of the Fourth of July, thousands of American flags will be placed at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond for the sixth consecutive year. It’s part of the VWM’s Hill of Heroes celebration from June 28-July 12.

The project is part of the Virginia War Memorial’s Hill of Heroes Celebration, which runs from June 28 to July 12.

About 12,000 flags – one to represent each of the Virginia men and women who died in military service from World War II to the present day – will be placed by volunteers from local businesses, community organizations and service organizations, among others.

The sight of thousands of flags covering the Memorial grounds and blowing in the breeze is truly awe-inspiring and inspirational and will remind all of us of the tremendous sacrifices of our Virginian heroes who gave their all to protect our precious freedoms,” said Virginia War Memorial Director Clay Mountcastle.

The Virginia War Memorial Foundation will host Hill of Heroes Day on Saturday, June 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., a free event featuring military vehicles, demonstrations, crafts, educational activities, food trucks, a used book sale and live music.

The public is invited to visit the memorial and take part in the activities.
