GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Twenty-four people were affected after a carbon monoxide leak at a medical facility in Goochland County, Virginia Tuesday morning.

According to the Goochland County Fire Department, just before 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2, crews responded to a medical building on the 1600 block of Wilkes Ridge Drive that was partially occupied and partially under construction for a report of a carbon monoxide leak.

The building was already being evacuated when authorities arrived. When they got to the scene, the crews found people complaining of headaches and nausea consistent with carbon monoxide exposure.

According to authorities, eight people were taken to local hospitals and they are all in non-life-threatening condition at this time. Another 18 people were evaluated and refused treatment, including four construction workers.

School buses were provided to keep those who had been evacuated cool.

“The building has since been cleared for entry by Goochland County Department of Fire-Rescue and Emergency Services and Goochland Department of Building Inspections and returned to operational status,” a release from the fire department reads. “Virginia Occupational Safety and Health Administration (VOSHA) and the Virginia Department of Health have been notified of the incident.”
