    Celebrate Independence Day at the Virginia State Capitol

    RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Virginia State Capitol Grounds in Richmond will soon transform for a free festival in celebration of Independence Day on Thursday, July 4.

    The celebration, hosted by the VA250 Commission , starts with a square fair from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. which will feature family-friendly events, pop-up museums, speakers, and children’s activities.

    Performers include:

    • Thomas Jefferson, as portrayed by Kurt Smith of Colonial Williamsburg
    • Colonial Williamsburg Fifes & Drums
    • The DAY Program
    • Quantico Marine Band
    • Roanoke Symphony Orchestra & Chorus
    • New Fellowship Gospel Choir
    • Virginia’s Tribal Nationals
    • Drone light show by Grucci

    The grand ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m. on the steps of the Capitol and end with a drone light show.

    Entry to the festival is free. Public parking is free and available at a parking garage on 14th Street and Main Street. Shuttles will be offered to take guests from the garage to Capitol Square.

    Free, chilled water bottles will be offered throughout Capitol Square and food trucks will be onsite.

    “You have a lot of choices of where to go for the Fourth of July, but this is the only time that you can be part of the nation’s 250 th anniversary which culminates in 2026,” Cheryl Wilson, executive director for the VA250 Commission, told 8News. “It’s the only time where the Fourth of July is both familiar as well as new. I think it’s going to be an inspirational program.”

    The Virginia Capitol Grounds are located at 1000 Bank Street in downtown Richmond.
