    Flash flooding in Henrico, other Central Virginia localities due to heavy rain

    HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The National Weather Service (NWS) reported flash flooding in Henrico County, Chesterfield County and Richmond on Friday, with standing water pooling in roadways.

    According to an 8:23 p.m. alert from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), all lanes on Interstate 288 North at Route 360 in Chesterfield County were shut down due to high water. Traffic was detoured to Route 360. As of 9:05 p.m., the scene has been cleared.

    Just before 8 p.m. on Friday, the NWS shared two reports of flooding in Henrico streets.

    According to the NWS, community members informed the NWS of flooding on Monument Avenue near its intersection with Horsepen Road via Waze.

    Additionally, the NWS reported high water in the roadway near the intersection of Three Chopt Road and Sweetwater Lane.

    Previous storm reports from the NWS indicated as much as 6 inches of water had flooded the intersection of Belvidere and Canal Street in Richmond just before 6 p.m. Friday.

    Many localities in Central Virginia are currently under a flash flood warning . Avoid areas where flooding is present — “turn around, don’t drown.”
