RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Stormtracker8 Meteorologist Matt DiNardo sat down with Captain Mike Rennie of Blue Mountain Drift and Captain Simón Valencia of Current Culture Fly Shop to discuss fly fishing for smallmouth, trout and musky in Richmond.

As a head guide, Rennie had a lot of valuable information to share about fly fishing in Virginia’s premier rivers, especially in regard to smallmouth.

“This is smallmouth season here in Virginia,” Rennie said. “We basically start fishing in March, leave them alone in May so they can spawn, and fish them all the way through October [and] November depending on the water and the weather.”

Given the fact that Rennie fishes year-round, he walked viewers through the seasonality of fishing, and when it is key to target certain fish like trout and musky.

“Seasonally, here in Virginia you can fish 365 days a year,” Rennie said. “We’re lucky enough to have fisheries that support everything from very warm water, to cold water trout, to winter time musky fishing, which is great here in Virginia.”
