    VCU Medical Center ranked No. 1 hospital in Richmond metro area, No. 2 in all of Virginia

    RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — VCU Medical Center in Richmond has been recognized as the #1 hospital in the Richmond metro area and the No. 2 hospital in all of Virginia by the U.S. News & World Report.

    According to a July 16 press release from VCU Health, this is the 14th consecutive year VCU Medical Center has been ranked the Richmond region’s top hospital and the second consecutive year its been ranked Virginia’s second-best hospital.

    The U.S. News & World Report reportedly evaluates over 5,000 hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions. According to the release, only 11% of all evaluated hospitals make the Best Hospitals ranking.

    “These rankings are a testament to the unwavering dedication and collaborative spirit of our outstanding team members,” said Michael Roussos, president of VCU Medical Center. “We are inspired daily by their commitment to excellence in patient care, medical education, and groundbreaking research.”

    The report also recognized VCU Medical Center as “High Performing” in multiple categories, including cancer, gastroenterology and GI surgery, as well as pulmonology and lung surgery.

    Regarding critical procedures and conditions, VCU Medical Center received the “highest ranking possible” in 10 such areas. According to the release, those include:

    • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
    • Colon cancer surgery
    • Gynecological cancer surgery
    • Heart attack
    • Heart bypass surgery
    • Heart failure
    • Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma
    • Lung cancer surgery
    • Pneumonia
    • Prostate cancer surgery

    In addition to VCU Medical Center’s overall honors, it earned multiple other specialty-specific national rankings for its various medical service centers.

    According to the release, the VCU Health Pauley Heart Center ranked No. 42 nationally in cardiology, heart and vascular surgery. This center reportedly provides the “full spectrum of clinical cardiac services.” Additionally, both treatments and devices pioneered there are now considered standards of cardiovascular care across the world.

    The orthopedic surgery department at VCU Health ranked No. 33 nationally in orthopoedics. According to the release, this honor was given to the department for its “comprehensive approach to helping patients live their best lives,” from sports to recreation to daily activity.

    Finally, the Sheltering Arms Institute, a partner of VCU Health’s since 2016, ranked No. 19 in the nation for physical rehabilitation. According to the release, the Institute only became eligible for these rankings in 2023. That year it ranked 29th — meaning it jumped 10 places in 2024.

    The Institute remains the top rehabilitation hospital in Virginia, according to the release.
