Man with heart condition calls applying for Social Security disability benefits a 'demoralizing' experience

I considered it a full-time job when I applied back in 2002, and I had a lawyer from the beginning. I think having a lawyer was the ONLY reason why I only got one rejection and was approved on the first appeal, ultimately taking 1 1/2 years overall. But many do not realize that when you apply, you’re already not working, obviously, because you’ve been determined to be disabled by at least one doctor. So you have no income, unless you happen to be married and your spouse is employed. It’s a very demeaning process to go through, and all too often the doctors you’re forced to see by social security do not report what you’ve actually said, resulting in longer delays. It’s extremely demoralizing, and if you happen to be disabled due to a chronic illness that affects your energy, it often further affects you physically. They obviously know this and their actions are intentional, with their hope being that you’ll simply give up, which obviously some do.
