RIDGEWOOD, NJ — Weeks after the Village of Ridgewood asked residents to restrict their water usage, the municipality is again asking residents to cut back, as the excessive heat could once again put the village at risk of a water shortage.

Due to the excessive heat, the village is imposing a two-day watering schedule – odd number addresses can water their lawn on Tuesday and Saturday, and even number addresses can water their lawn on Wednesday and Sunday. There will be no residential watering on Monday, Thursday and Friday.

The announcement comes after the village narrowly avoided stage-3 water restrictions due to sprinkler overuse at the end of June. Automatic sprinkler overuse led to Ridgewood's water reserves being exhausted, mostly from automatic lawn watering systems — one of Ridgewood's reserve tanks saw a 19-foot drop in a single evening. The village purchased over four million gallons of water from neighboring municipalities combat the shortage. Although, due to utility agreements and state regulations, it is not a measure that can be used regularly.

They relied chiefly on the cooperation of village residents to avoid more stringent restrictions and will do so once again as Ridgewood is once again beset by another heat wave. TAPinto Ridgewood will have more on this story as it develops.
