This traditional, delicious southern sauce, Mississippi Comeback Sauce, has its roots in Jackson. Many different restaurants have this sauce right on the menu as dipping sauces, toppings, and even salad dressing. People in Mississippi never say "see you later" or "goodbye" when you leave a place. Rather, they say, "Y'all come back." This flavorful sauce is undoubtedly a great way to make sure they do!

Comeback sauce tastes a lot like Louisiana rémoulade or Thousand Island salad dressing, except a little better, in my opinion. No cooking is necessary. All you have to do is combine minced onion and garlic with standard pantry items like mayonnaise, chili sauce, ketchup, mustard, oil, and Worcestershire sauce. Try to prepare the sauce a day in advance and chill it overnight for optimal flavor.

You'll find a million uses for Comeback Sauce after tasting it for yourself. Serve it with fried seafood in place of tartar sauce, or as a great addition to sandwiches or burgers, salad dressing, or even a drizzle over tacos. It also works well as a dipping sauce for wings, chicken nuggets, and french fries, on the grill as a BBQ sauce, or as a marinade for anything else you can think of.

We LITERALLY put this on everything.

    Traditional Southern Comeback Sauce

    Ingredients

    • One cup of mayonnaise
    • One-fourth cup of chili sauce
    • One-fourth cup ketchup
    • One-fourth cup vegetable oil
    • Two tablespoons of finely chopped onion
    • One teaspoon of spicy brown mustard (Creole mustard)
    • One teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
    • One teaspoon of finely powdered black pepper
    • Two medium-sized garlic cloves, chopped finely

    Directions

Fill a jar with a screw-top cover with the mayonnaise, ketchup, chili sauce, oil, onion, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, and garlic. You can mix by stirring, shaking, or with an immersion blender. It's best to let this baby marinate overnight in the fridge, so all those flavors become friends.

    Pro Tips

    • The recipe's chili sauce is a condiment, not to be mistaken with Asian chili paste, that tastes like ketchup. Most supermarket stores have it by the ketchup section.
    • Pour in as much as half a cup of vegetable oil to thin it out for salad dressing.

    Different Recipes

    • A teaspoon or two of sambal (Asian chili paste), a little Tabasco or cayenne, or some Sriracha sauce will all add heat to the sauce.
    • Use one teaspoon of garlic powder if the taste of raw garlic bothers you. Garlic powder will keep the sauce fresh for up to six days.
    • You can use approximately 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder in place of the minced onion.
