ALTOONA, Iowa — Adventureland’s Tornado roller coaster will be named a landmark coaster by the American Coaster Enthusiasts. The organization will present the Altoona theme park with its landmark plaque on August 17, when the park hosts the American Coaster Enthusiasts’ national Preservation Conference. Drinking Water Remains in Advisory in Southern Iowa
(Union County) Due to issues in the water distribution system, Residents in Union and Madison counties are under a ‘Drinking Water Advisory’ until early next week. Customers in specific areas are advised to boil water before consumption. The Southern Iowa Rural Water Association is working to lift the advisory after completing repairs and conducting bacterial tests. Smithfield Foods Closing its Iowa Facility
(NAFB.com) – Smithfield Foods will close its Altoona, Iowa, ham boning facility and consolidate the production volume at other locations to improve the efficiency of its manufacturing platform. Smithfield says it will provide transition assistance to the 314 employees at the facility who will be affected by the closure. The company will meet with employees individually to provide additional details about the transition plans, including severance and potential employment opportunities with Smithfield. “We appreciate the great work our Altoona employees have done over the years and are committed to supporting every employee through the transition,” says Doug Sutton, chief manufacturing officer at Smithfield Foods. “We’ve been successful in retaining many of our people in positions with Smithfield during previous consolidations and will provide information about opportunities at other Smithfield locations.” Production from Smithfield’s Altoona facility will be consolidated into existing company facilities in Monmouth, Illinois, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Crete, Nebraska.

On March 9, 1926, the Des Moines Register's sister paper, the Evening Tribune, reports that a ticket headed by women has turned back an effort to install a KKK majority on the city's school board. The women-led effort succeeds just six years after passage of the 19th Amendment grants women the right to vote. 44-year-old woman drowns at Jefferson County summer camp
DITTMER, Mo. — A woman drowned on Sunday at a Jefferson County summer camp for people with developmental disabilities, authorities said. A spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said emergency crews responded to Sunnyhill at 6555 Sunlit Way in Dittmer, where they found 44-year-old Martha Boland unresponsive in a pool.
Company files lawsuit over money owed for Southeast Polk stadium construction work
A subcontractor has filed a lawsuit against the Southeast Polk Community School District and main contractor Graphite Construction Group, claiming it's owed over $300,000 for work on the school district's new stadium.
