We did see him tease retirement on television earlier this year. Of course, it wound up being a ruse , similar to what Mark Henry pulled off long ago. And you have to think that at least some of what he was saying was at least partly true. He was speaking from the heart, talking about his family and what he has missed. Even if he’s still going, he clearly isn’t going to be around forever. And while he has not retired from WWE, and he hasn’t indicated a farewell tou r (yet), is AJ Styles done wrestling in a place that made him famous?
Will AJ Styles Ever Wrestle In Japan Again?
When Styles debuted in the Royal Rumble so many years ago, everyone knew him as a major international name. Sure, he has worked in TNA ( and may do so once again , thanks to the new partnership), he was a massive star overseas. Specifically, Japan. And the influence of Japanese wrestling and culture has left a mark on Styles (and his gear).
During the recent WWE tour of Japan, AJ Styles worked several matches. He also was interviewed for WWE’s YouTube channel . On the interview he was asked about a mask he was wearing to the ring. Styles noted that as he wrestled in Japan, wearing masks to the ring became something he would do. He went on to say that this could be his last time wrestling in Japan, so he wanted to do things right.
A couple thoughts here. First, you do never know when you will be done. He might think he has five years left, but then a tragic injury cuts things short. Second, he has been a legend in Japan, and between the WWE tour and his cameo for Pro Wrestling NOAH, AJ has enjoyed a trip down memory lane, so to speak. So, if he’s winding things down, he should do so as he sees fit. That being said, considering how much time he spent working there, I suspect when he does decide to officially call it a career, the Japanese fans will want to give him a proper farewell.
