Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir recently told a story about Jon Jones that shows why he is the mixed martial arts GOAT.

Love him or hate him, it is difficult to argue Jon Jones isn’t the greatest UFC fighter of all time. If not for a questionable disqualification loss in 2009, the former light heavyweight champion would have a sparkling 28-0 record as a cage fighter.

Yet his impressive record isn’t what makes Jones so special, it’s how he racked up that number, and against who that is so awe-inspiring. During his 15 years in the sport, he has beaten nine men who have held major MMA titles — including seven from the UFC. And not only did he score wins over the best of his era, but he often earned finishes on those future Hall-of-Famers.

There are many tales about “Bones'” greatness, but this week former UFC heavyweight king Frank Mir added a new one. And it comes from a training session the two had years ago.

Frank Mir tells amazing story of being unable to stop Jon Jones in a grappling session

“I remember when I locked on to him [in training]. As far as static strength goes, I’ve never felt anybody like that in my life.” Mir told Inside Fighting . “Here’s one memory I have. I am in his guard. He grabbed both my wrists and I kind of stood up for a second because I couldn’t release his grip. He literally scoots his a** out, pulls his ankles behind him, and stands up. While holding my hands.

“And I could do nothing to stop him. I tried to drive forward and I couldn’t. He finally lets my hands go and I remember I was like, pause it for a second,” he remembered. “I’m looking down at my hands, ‘There’s no way you just did that?’ He looked at me and he goes, ‘That’s a great move right?’ I’m like, ‘Jon, there’s nobody else in the world that I know you can teach that move to that can probably pull it off.”

The UFC legend is a natural heavyweight who had a distinguished career in the division. But he is also viewed as one of the greatest heavyweight grapplers of all time. And this happened before Jon Jones eventually moved up to heavyweight last year and won another UFC belt in a second division.
