Cold water has been poured on a heavily rumored plan for Canelo Alvarez’s next fight.

Alvarez recently had a successful undisputed super middleweight title defense against Edgar Berlanga. It was a one-sided showing from the Mexican superstar, who scored a unanimous decision win. Speculation has run rampant after Alvarez secured his fifth straight victory.

Current WBA junior middleweight champion Terence Crawford has consistently called for a mega showdown with Alvarez. That fight may seem more likely in the future than Alvarez vs. David Benavidez, given payout demands from the unified super middleweight king.

One rumor that had been swirling recently was the claim that Alvarez would be sharing a card with super bantamweight king Naoya Inoue in Japan. Those who were skeptical of the rumor may have been proven right.

ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez reports that Canelo Alvarez will not be fighting in Japan before 2024 comes to a close. The report also notes the time frame for Alvarez’s in-ring return.

“Although [Eddy Reynoso[ and Canelo have shown their interest in fighting in Japan, it is not true, as reported in some sites, that he will fight in December in the Land of the Rising Sun,” Rodriguez wrote. “His return is expected next May.”

While many considered Alvarez’s recent bout with Berlanga to be low risk, the event certainly garnered interest. The fight reportedly drew 650,000 PPV buys and secured a live gate of $17 million for the T-Mobile Arena.

Whether Alvarez goes for a high-profile fight such as sharing the ring with Crawford, or if he faces a mandatory challenger, the biggest star in the sport figures to be in for another massive payday.
