O’Brien’s Market sells single location to Cost Less. When the change will go in effect

Local grocery chain O’Brien’s Market sold its Riverbank location to Cost Less Food Company.

O’Brien’s is currently holding a closing sale, all groceries are 25% off, which started July 1. According to a store manager, the store will officially close on Sunday, July 7.

O’Brien’s supermarket opened its first location in Modesto in 1978, and since then it has added two more stores — a Riverbank location in 1994 and a second Modesto location in 2002.

Both of its Modesto locations will remain open.

Cost Less Food Co. currently has 8 locations open in Northern and Central California; Riverbank will be its ninth.

Cost Less is hiring baggers, stockers and meat cutters for its new store. Applications can be found at costlessfoods.com/careers/ .

O’Brien’s did not reply to a request for comment.

Since 1994 O’Brien’s Riverbank has built loyal customers who are sad to see the location close.

“O’Brien’s provided quality shopping with a small-town feel. We knew the staff by name, and they knew us. It felt comfortable shopping there,” Rich and Chris Holmer said in a Letter to the Editor . “You will be greatly missed.”
