Cardboard boats will again set sail — or sink — on the Peconic River Aug. 3, when Riverhead’s popular cardboard boat races take place on the downtown riverfront. The crowd-pleasing summer event, first launched in 2010, challenges people of all ages to construct boats of cardboard and duct tape for competition in four race divisions: Youth Regatta (all crew members must be under 12), Grand National Regatta (all crew members must be 12 and over), Yacht Club Regatta (crew can be any combination of ages) and the Outlaw Race (If your boat can still float after competing in one of the other races, here’s your second chance.)

Huntington Station man, 67, killed in head-on crash on Main Road in Aquebogue
A Huntington Station man was killed in a head-on collision yesterday on Main Road in Aquebogue, just east of Union Avenue. The accident, which occurred at about 11:47 a.m., involved a 2018 BMW driven by Anthony Croce, 65, of Brooklyn and a 2002 Nissan operated by Matthew Schramm, 67, of Huntington Station, Riverhead Police said in a press release issued this morning. Both drivers, each the sole occupant of their vehicle, sustained significant injuries in the crash, police said.

Barney P. Harris of Mattituck died on July 18, 2024, at Southampton Hospital. He was 98. Born in Peconic, Harris served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he captured a Japanese battle flag in the South Pacific. After his military service, he worked for the Southold Police Department for 35 years, retiring as a sergeant in 1987. He also held the distinction of being the longest-serving volunteer firefighter in New York state, with 73 years of service. His family said he was an avid golfer who enjoyed harness and thoroughbred horse racing, frequenting Foxwoods Casino, playing cards, watching baseball and spending time with family and friends.

Myles on Main, downtown Riverhead’s newest eatery, opened on June 29 in the Preston House & Hotel on East Main Street. NorthPoint Development, the Kansas City, Missouri developer that proposed a 641,000-square-foot logistics center on Middle Road in Calverton, has abandoned its plans. A New York City developer who was a joint venture partner in the development, has purchased the Kansas City developer’s interest in the company that held title to the property and plans to scale back the original proposal, reducing the development by about 150,000 square feet.

Shirley A. Cutler, 78
Shirley A. Cutler of Calverton died on July 4, 2024. She was 78 years old. Born on May 6, 1946, in Yatesville, North Carolina, she was known as “Bee” to her family and friends. She moved to Calverton in December 1960. Her family said she loved spending time with them, especially during annual trips to Florida and family reunions in North Carolina. She was an avid player of the games “Trouble” and “Spades” and enjoyed watching game and court shows on television. She dedicated her life to Jehovah in the mid-1980s and was known for her Bible-based beliefs.
