RIVERSIDE, Mo. — From Liberty to Lee’s Summit, heavy rain and winds up to 90 mph caused downed branches and power outages.

In Riverside, the wind caused two semis along 635 to overturn — no one was injured. But that’s not the case at Dishonest Don’s Fireworks off of Vivion Road in Riverside.

Severe storms hit Kansas City area, knocking down trees, power lines and semis

There were several injuries at Dishonest Don’s, including a broken foot and a possible tear in someone’s knee. A woman was even checked at the ER for internal bleeding.

During the storm, the tent for the fireworks shops collapsed from a possible microburst.

“It was almost like a tornado, and we were trying to get out as fast as we could. We had about 3 minutes, 4 minutes notice of this coming,” Kurt Eckard, an employee at Dishonest Don’s Fireworks, said.

Eckard said he hasn’t seen anything like this, even after his house was hit by a tornado in the early 2000s.

“We did have 2 employees that did get trapped under the tent but luckily, they were under a set of tables and the tent fell above them and they were safe,” Eckard said.

He said it took them five to 10 minutes to get them out.

They are hoping to have Dishonest Don’s Fireworks back open by Wednesday afternoon.
