Residents at Hermitage Roanoke participate in second annual Honeybee Harvest

ROANOKE, Va. ( WFXR )– The Hermitage Roanoke Senior Living Center was buzzing with excitement about the second annual honeybee harvest on Thursday, June 27.

Hermitage Roanoke is a life plan community center that offers independent living, assisted living, and health services for seniors 62 years old and older. They are committed to providing vibrant lifestyles as well as comfort and security throughout offered services.

Over the past two years, residents at Hermitage Roanoke have been working with the owner of Heritage Apiary to get a closer look at how beehives work. The owner of Heritage Apiary, Vasilia McCrady, says bee education is important during the summer months as temperatures begin to rise.

“We’re about three weeks ahead of schedule when it comes to anything bee-related or nature so everything is very dry right now,” said McCrady. “Normally we are usually safe when going into July when it comes to food sources for the bees.”

Although McCrady says feeding bees can make them sick, however, leaving them water will help bees out during the higher temperatures.
