ROANOKE, Va. ( WFXR ) — Hot and muggy conditions will continue to impact Southwest and Central Virginia through the weekend. Isolated to scattered showers and storms are possible for the next few days.

A mix of sun and clouds will be overhead on Thursday with afternoon temperatures rising into the hot upper 80s and 90s. The humid air will result in triple-digit heat index values east of the Blue Ridge.

When dealing with hot weather, here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

    • If you plan on working or exercising outside, try to do so during the morning or evening when temperatures aren’t as hot
    • Take frequent breaks when working outside
    • Drink plenty of water
    • Stay in the shade when you can
    • Consider wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothes

A few showers and storms are possible on Thursday. There is some instability due to the heat and humidity in place, so stronger storms could develop. The main storm threats are gusty winds, hail, and downpours. Not everyone will see rain, but you’ll want to stay weather-aware.

A storm system will approach from the west for the end of the week. Scattered showers and storms are anticipated on Friday and Saturday. The hot and humid conditions will continue for both days with afternoon highs in the 80s and 90s. The instability could allow strong to severe thunderstorms to develop. Localized flooding is also a concern.

Rain chances will decrease on Sunday as a cold front passes through the region. It will be much quieter weather-wise, but isolated showers and storms are still possible. Highs will be in the near-average 80s.
