It’s not everyday that you see a 19th-century castle brimming with contemporary art from Andy Warhol, but then again, Bayham Hall is not your average English country estate . The Grade II-listed structure in Kent was originally built in 1870 by Scottish architect David Brandon as the rural seat for the 3rd Marquess of Camden. Once presiding over a larger swath of acreage, today the baronial mansion, which has been divided up into three substantial apartments, is situated on just over five lush acres and overlooks parklands designed by Humphry Repton, as well as the protected, historic ruins of Bayham Abbey, an ancient church site built between the 13th and 15th centuries.

Bayham Hall has been thoughtfully renovated by the current sellers, who also restored the Jacobean-style facade and overhauled the home with contemporary interiors. While there are many original details, such as crown moldings, cornices, ceiling motifs, wood floors, and stained glass windows, the home’s design is decidedly of-the-moment. Modern furniture and light fixtures, state-of-the-art appliances, new tiling, and vibrant artworks bring this estate to life in an unexpected way. Now, the lion’s share of Bayham Hall, the entire west wing, can be yours for $4.6 million and is listed with John D. Wood & Co.

The formal drawing room showcases period detailing and pastoral vistas.

Altogether, the 7,800-square-foot apartment has eight bedrooms spread over three floors, as well as several elegantly proportioned living and entertaining spaces. The Victorian-style rooms are sprinkled with brightly colored furniture and decor, as well as large-format modern artworks resulting in a fresh take on a country manor home.

A one-mile-long gravel driveway meanders between manicured landscaping and rolling lawns to the front of the imposing edifice, and stone steps lead into the historic home, which looks plucked out of a bygone era. Inside the residence, you are greeted by a double-height reception hall with soaring ceilings, an antler chandelier, and a carved oak staircase with several landings. Cathedral-worthy stained glass windows let in plenty of natural light, and there’s also a bright seating area underneath the chandelier.

The reception hall leads to the stately formal drawing room, which has a large fireplace, soaring ceilings with intricate crown moldings, and massive windows that frame a serene view over the landscape. This level also features a spacious secondary sitting room, a formal dining area, and a gourmet kitchen that’s within the original mansion’s library and fitted with bespoke cabinetry, Miele appliances, industrial lighting, and an eat-in kitchen island. Light streams into the space through huge windows.

The sun-filled eat-in kitchen is equipped with custom cabinets and gourmet appliances.

The sunny primary suite, with the largest en suite bathroom in the home, fitted wardrobes, and incredible park views, is positioned on the second floor, which has an additional en suite bedroom, ideal as a nursery, plus a small bedroom that could be converted into a gym or art studio. The third floor houses the remaining five bedrooms, which each have incredible views.

Arguably the most significant additions to the home are the energy-saving technologies. There’s a geo-thermal heat pump, solar panels, secondary glazing, and Thermo Protect insulation. There’s also fiber optic broadband and Cat6 cabling for all those who need to remain connected. Rounding out the offering is a detached garage and a storage shed.

Bayahm Hall is just a short drive from Tunbridge Wells, an area that’s about one hour outside of London and known for its sprawling castles, lush parks, and country manors.
