Hollywood is cooking up a new biopic on the late, great Anthony Bourdain.

Aptly titled Tony , the feature film will chronicle the colorful life and prolific career of the beloved chef and TV host, who died by suicide in 2018 at age 61. The production has attracted quite a sizzling cast and crew, too, according to The Hollywood Reporter .

The movie, which hails from New York-based studio A24 and L.A.-based production company Star Thrower Entertainment, will be based on a script written by Todd Bartels and Lou Howe and is set to be directed by Matt Johnson of Blackberry fame. Trevor and Tim White are in talks to produce alongside Matthew Miller and Johnson. Emily Rose will executive produce.

Young American actor Dominic Sessa is set to star as the culinary icon. The 21-year-old New Jersey native made his film debut in Alexander Payne’s coming-of-age dramedy The Holdovers , portraying troubled student Angus Tully opposite curmudgeonly teacher Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti). His performance earned him a Critics Choice Award for Best Young Performer and a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Bourdain poses in a New York restaurant in 2007.

Sessa, next set to appear in Now You See Me 3 , certainly has his work cut out for him. Bourdain exploded into public consciousness in the early 2000s, with his unflinching memoir Kitchen Confidential . He then landed a string of travel programs, through which he traversed the globe to give us at home a taste of the most authentic culinary experiences. This formulaic approach could have become tired and predictable, but Bourdain was an ever-charismatic host who approached food and travel with a deep curiosity. His series No Reservations ran for eight seasons after which Parts Unknown ran for a further 12 seasons. Both shows won multiple awards and were enjoyed the world over.

Unsurprisingly, Bourdain’s story has already made it to the big screen. Kitchen Confidential was made into a TV series in 2005, with Bradley Cooper assuming the role of Bourdain. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville then premiered a Bourdain documentary called Roadrunner at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2021.

Details on Tony remain scant at this stage. We do not yet know what period of Bourdain’s life the film will cover, nor when the movie will debut. We do know the production team has some great material to work with, though.
