This Ultra-Rare Porsche 911 Could Fetch $1.5 Million at Auction

A dazzling example of one of Porsche’s finest (and rarest) race cars of the 1990s is about to change hands.

RM Sotheby’s will auction off a rare 1993 911 Carrera RSR 3.8 as part of its annual Monterey Car Week sale. It wouldn’t be a stretch to call the high-performance GT pristine, either, as it has just 25 miles on the odometer.

Released near the tail end of the 964 generation, the Carrera RSR 3.8 was a throwback to the days when Porsche dominated production-based GT racing. As such, it was a super lightweight, wide-body, rear-wheel-drive 911 Turbo that could be entered in any of Europe’s many GT series. Powering the attractive racer was a naturally aspirated, air-cooled 3.8-liter inline-six that could churn out up to 375 horses and 264 ft lb of torque based on competition’s regulations.

Porsche built just 51 examples of the Carrera RSR 3.8, of which only two in Guards Red, including the chassis up for auction, no. 496090. The bold, glossy color covers every inch of the body, broken up only by black trim along the headlamps, windshield, and windows. The interior, as tends to be the case inside a race car, is spartan, devoid of creature comforts but possessing Recaro racing seats and a fire extinguisher. In fact, were it not for the stripped-down cabin, the hood pins, and the giant rear wing, you’d actually be hard-pressed to tell it was built for the track.

This example’s biggest selling point, though, is that it has barely been touched since leaving the factory, totaling just 25 miles over the last three-plus decades. The car was initially sold to Walter Scheuermann in Germany in December of 1993, who would then sell it to a “noted” Japanese collection, where it would remain for the next two decades. It was imported to the U.S. in 2013, sometime after which it was acquired by the unnamed seller. They’ve kept it in immaculate shape since, enlisting San Rafael, California’s Retrosport for a comprehensive $40,000 servicing that prepared it for road use.

The Carrera RSR 3.8 is one of over 200 cars that will be auctioned off by RM Sotheby’s during its Monterey Car Week sale , which runs from Thursday, August 15, to Saturday, August 17. Considering the car’s condition and exclusivity, it’s little wonder the auction house expects it to fetch between $1.25 million and $1.5 million.
